Just done my own benchmarking project, and was frightened by how much they are losing ,I thought we were doing a good job, up to date with everything, very shocked,

I’ve come to the conclusion I do better buying B&W calves and running them through as bullocks. For me, the cow just eats too much. But my farm could dairy, so I need to benchmark against that really.

Did you not know they were losing money before you did the benchmarking?

We ran sucklers and ewes until we put ewes off 6 years ago as decided the sheep weren’t paying . We have went from making nowt or just a little to making healthy profit every year running Angus cows .we don’t employ anybody full time though but still have a good quality of life. Not paying huge rents help but try to get the best out of what we have to work with. So I think yes there is a future in suckler cows.

That's interesting. I thought sheep would have been more profitable last few years.
