JCB 2135 Clutch Problem

Young yellowbelly has a 2135 with a very 'savage, jumpy' clutch. I've not seen it but he says it's 'all or nothing'. You can't ease it in or out gently.

Apparently, it's an oil operated system with a master and slave cylinder.

Anybody any idea where he should start looking??

Master cylinder first??
Slave cylinder first??

Any help appreciated. TIA.

But if burning isn’t an option, what age is it? Our 2011 I’m pretty sure has a potentiometer on clutch pedal which comes out of adjustment, or maybe that was the throttle, or probably both....,,,,,

Also something to do with micro switches on the clutch pedal. If the splitter clutch bangs in late (after the main clutch has started to bite) it will kick off quite suddenly. There's a post on here somewhere about it.

Ah 98/99 means it's an Autoshift (Dry clutch), worth renewing the fluid in the clutch system and bleeding the system to ensure no moisture or air present. Quite common for the booster cylinder to fail causing the symptoms you describe as do plates braking away from the clutch disk. But lets start with the basics...

1. Renew clutch fluid

2. Bleed clutch

3. If no better bypass the clutch booster on the side of the transmission. This will mean a heavy clutch pedal but will allow diagnosis of a faulty booster or drive plate.

4. If booster being bypassed doesn't solve the problem and the master cylinder is functioning correctly (firm pedal, feels heavy when applying clutch pedal) then time to split and examine clutch plate for missing paddles.

Note: the clutch system uses LHM (Light Hydraulic Mineral Oil) ISO VG15 - NOT DOT 4 as used in the braking system.

He hasn't had to resort to setting it on fire  Fluid looked murky so a drain, fluid change and bleeding has fixed the problem (y)(y)

Thank you for the update, I'm sure this will help others see what the fault was and maybe learn from it. They're not bad tractors really, just take a little more effort to drive and look after at times than conventional tractors.
