JCB 3cx perkins engine issue

The engine made a sort of poow noise under load and now there is a loud metallic rattle, its lost power and very smoky. At first I thought it was baffles in the silencer come loose, its that sort of rattle but that wouldn't make it smoke would it? With the smoke and loss in power is it more likely the turbo? Its a 1999 model

TIA

Black smoke (diesel) or white smoke (possibly turbo)? Usually turbo will do away with large volumes of oil? Check the diaphragm on the back of the pump where the pipe comes from the inlet manifold, could cause black smoke, but I'm not sure about the noise? Would you say its running on all the cylinders (smooth)?

It is 18 miles away so can't check anything atm, but it appears to run smoothly enough on all cyl.
If any load is applied there is black smoke, but idling it is white!
The rattle is quite loud and constant not really varying with engine speed

It sounds ,as though the bush , in the idler gear of the engine , has gone. This allows the gear to float about ,which alters the injection timing, causing smoke . Engine will still rev up smoothly. It is a fairly common problem on 1000 series Perkins.

I think , if you remove the water pump, you should be able to feel if the idler , is loose. Been a while since, I did one.

i've had a cam shaft key way snap still ran but rattled and smoked but trying to guess what it could be without being there is hard it could be so many things broken injector had that as well rattled with the tip in the cylinder that didn't end well

God, yes if anything lands up within the cylinder, only disaster can result!

Now, this would seem plausible, is it an easy fix?

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions!

Id be aiming along those lines to! But be sure to check the basis as said before! The last idler job i did was fairly easy, but it was on a telehandler so easy to get the timing cover off... not to sure about the 3cx!

I had a tractor turbo seal go, it smoked white on idle, but run fine otherwise, would yours show black smoke at load because its not getting enough air? does it still have all its power?
