A friend and neighbour to me recently bought a jcb 3185 from out of province. Yesterday it suddenly won’t go into gear either reverse or forward. Any pointers as to where to start looking.

Check the terminals on the battery. if not it could be the air valve ,what selects the gears under the floor.

Firstly check selection of all ranges H,M,L and R.

when you do select any range, do the air shifter rams move at all?

there are micro switches on each ram that tell the controller the status of the ram.

Also try the forward reverse stalk,have had the contacts play up ,sometimes removing rubber seal and a good spray of wd40 will sort it temporarily...or if it's loose on the column itself check its moving properly.after they as said look at the air selector rams to see if moving...no faults showing on dash?

Quick update. Jato nailed it. Friend said it was a micro switch that have come loose. He fixed it and it’s running great. Many thanks from Richard.
