As jack c says the want to be all but touching the shear bar

I normally turn the drum backward till it just touches the shear bar, then wind it back 1/4 of a turn on the drum bolts

Our chopper man always reckons he got on better pushing the drum as far back as possible then setting the blades to just about touch the shear bar then sharpen it and it went well

That’s true but if you do this with a new set of blades, the blades are not in the drum far enough and could more easily snap if you’re not too careful.

He said you can't take it too far as they can catch the back of the drum housing is that right? He always said it blew better with them well out as it was a bit bigger . He had a bracket made to set them at a distance from the centre tube of the drum it worked well

Correct. There is a measurement for the position of the drum in the tub before you mount knives on. It’s in the instruction manual

The blade cutting edge should be 156mm from the centre tube of the drum.
There is a wear measurement for the blade too which i forget just now.
Set them like this, give it a little rub to even it out and pull it forward till its almost scuffing.

I was led to believe that the basic driveline and drum speeds, roller speeds were the same on a 1050 as a 900, just beefed up to allow more power through
