John Deere 1177 H4 series 2 Engine oil leak

Hello
So I have an elderly 1177 combine here that over winter has decided to lose all of its engine oil. I first noticed that the oil was gone when I moved it out of the shed briefly in the autumn. I put it down to just needing a top up as it does burn a bit these days. I thought it odd that it took loads but was busy and not really thinking about it. Anyway what i put in has now gone again, in fact it went quite rapidly after I had put it back away. For it to be emptying its self stationary with the engine off I guess that it is not the crank case seal as mentioned to me before on here? I think it must be a leak low down to run out like it is, so, either the drain hose has a hole......... possibly rat damaged? or worse a cracked sump?

Do any of you have a similar experience and if so what was it, just wondering where to start looking and if you all think I am on the right track?

Bonne soiree

Have you got a spit or bite hole in the drain pipe???? From memory the pipe comes from the sump and the nut to drain it is on the side under the bell housing.

Are you sure it's not the crank case seal???? We had to have the bell housing off ours and do the seals as it started leaking oil but it was visible done the side of the combine.

If your loosing the whole of the sumps capacity surely you can see where it's going and where it's coming from!!

So the sump capacity is about 15 litres, and to loose that externally you would have a very obvious leak and be able to track it back to source.

The drain tube is a likely culprit and after these few years could easily be brittle and leaking.

How about you have a closer look around the engine and come back to us with more detail...

Ah it was you! You did mention that before when I asked on someone else’s thread as an aside to something else that was being discussed. I have not actually looked yet but seeing as the sump is being emptied whilst just sitting there I am guessing/hoping it might be the pipe. I just thought I would ask first. Think depending on which day I have to retrieve my good lady from hospital I will look either tomorrow or Tuesday and in theory I should be able to see a hole, if not I wondered about pressurising the sump to help. Hopefully it’s simple as I can’t face a major job at the moment and I have yet to find a suitable willing helper round here!

That’s what I am hoping but I thought I would just ask first to see if anyone had any similar experience.
