my jd 3040 is stuck in 4wd. Am I right in thinking the clutch needs power to keep it disconnected. I can hear the solinoid clicking if I attach a battery. I have disconnected the drive shaft. Does anyone know if I should be able to turn the 4wd output by hand if the solinoid is powered up?

Thank you. Its turns fine. Just now need to sort out a new power supply as there is no power getting to the solenoid.
Probably a broken/dry solder joint in the dash circuit board (it’s common on 40/50 series), they aren’t bad for doing if you have a little bit of patience.
its also worth check the wire where it runs down the side of the transmission to the solenoid, the tend to perish and crack with age.
