John Deere 4430 starter hangs in

Does anyone have any idea why my professionally repaired Nikkon Denso starter on my 1977 John Deere 4430 tractor now hangs in, it throws out when it starts but not if it doesn’t start, I have iliminated all the tractors wiring and switches and solenoid etc by using a test wire supply direct to my otherwise fully connected starter, having used the tractor for the last 25 years I know it has never done this before and I only had the starter repaired because it was getting more difficult to get the starter to engage properly with the starter ring. I think the repair shop must have put an incorrect gear on but they are adamant they have fitted the correct one on and I cannot find a different option online myself and as the tractors starter ring looks fine I am really confused at the moment!

Now Then..
Have you tried the starter while nipped in a vice using some jump leads,,, see how it looks??
I think the Nippondenso starter may now be obsolete from JD tho parts may still be available.
A Reman Delco Remy starter SE501446 could be had for just over £300.00

Thank you, Tractotech.
Yes I did test the repaired starter in my vice and it operated perfectly, Looking up the specification of your SE501446 I believe the gear is the same 10 tooth and 39.9mm OD that they have fitted to my reconditioned starter, I was hoping to be able to give these people a starter part number that was correct for my old tractor as they are wanting to fit the correct starter gear if they can obtain it.

No I hadn’t looked at JD Parts! This is helpful to identify the correct substituted part numbers which I will take to the repair firm, and they can hopefully cross refer with the spec of the gear they have supplied, but I think they will have already done this on the several occasions that I have visited them.

Yes I have found it, and it is a very helpful site, I can now go back to the starter repair company next week with accurate part numbers. Many thanks

Would you have a bad ring-gear?
Unfortunately 6 cylinders (in-line) always stop in one of three spots, leaving the ring-gear prone to excessive wear. The old starter bendix (gear) was worn to suit the wear in the ring-gear. Definitely worth a look ..........

Thanks Mursal, I checked the ring gear and I couldn’t even find one place on it that looked worn.
