John Deere fuel filters

Are John Deere fuel filters too fine? My 6505 with a 5 micron filter never gives any trouble but the 6220se with a 10 and 2 micron filters seems to need new filters every 20 or 30 hours. Am I better going ditching the 2 micron for a 5? Or have I got algal growth in the tractor fuel tank, if so what am I looking for:scratchhead:

The 6620 probably has a more finely made injection system, requiring cleaner fuel. My premium has those filters but is common rail so fussy about fuel. Not sure on SE injection system. I would try a filter on the fuel tank first so only clean fuel goes in the tractor tanks.

The fuel tank has a 40 micron plus water filter on it and I don't have any problems with any other tractors (5) or the excavator. The SE is mechanical but with an electronic distributor on the end of the injection pump.

Now Then..
When you say 6505,, is that a John Deere??
Why are you changing the filters on your SE tractor, is the glass bowl full of dirt when you change them?? If your fuel looks clean in the bowl the filters should be OK..
You'll have a Stanadyne DE10 injection pump. How many hours has it done?? Does the glow plug light ever flash??

Sorry JD6506.
No, the filter bowl is clear and the housing and bowl are new as is the rubber pipework. Yes a Stanadyne DE10 that was reconditioned a 150 hours ago. The glow-plug light only flashes just before it stalls.

Basically the filters are changed and the tractor will run fine for 20 to 30 hours, then it starts missing occasionally and is more noticeable when idling, this then gets progressively worse until it will just stall.

Shameless hijack here ;)

I have a 6920 flashing the glow plug light. I’d always been told it was the water sensor on the filter bowl, is that right?

I haven't checked, but I was told by a JD mechanic their isn't one on a 6220 in the tank,so didn't look further.

I would be surprised if there isn't one.
We are not talking Dumas here though are we:nailbiting:
For a second opinion regarding the tank filter, Sebastian at agri 86 in chauviny is very knowledgeable and helpful (y) (doesn't speak English though)

Nay,,,, JD mechanic,,, fitter,,,, Pffft...
All 6000 series tractors left the factory with some kind of filter on the pipe in the tank. Yours is the type to the left on attached picture (but not in the box) .. It's like a gauze sock. Check that the pipe is cut at 45° for improved filtration / flow
