John deere powerquad problem

Got a 6510 with electronic powerquad (buttons) to shift 1 - 4

All been working as it should and still does. BUT occasionally when shifting from say 4 to 3 or 2 to 3 or from 1 to 2 to 3, I’m getting a funny noise from under the cab, doesn’t sound metallic more as if oil is not going somewhere it should or a solenoid is stuck (bit hard to explain) or if it hasn’t let go of the previous powerquad gear. It does change speed when changing up or down with the noise.

The only way to stop the noise seems to be change back down or up and then change again and all is fine.

Can’t get it to do it all the time maybe only does it with the oil hot, tried this morning and it was perfect but cant say for sure yet and definitely once it has done it once it wont do it all the time.

Any ideas

My mc cormick went into 2 and 3 ok but would not go into 1 and 4 straight away,(sometimes a long delay) was worse when hot, anyway a new solenoid sorted it. hope this helps

6410 here used to do the same when hard at work drilling and had to change down the power quad to turn at the headland. Shuttle it up or down a gear and it goes away. Sounds like it is starved of oil. Never done anything about it and very rarely happens now it’s off drilling duties.

Just dropped the transmission oil and filters and cleaned the gauze screen and all were virtually spotless so that wouldn’t have been the issue. Mine has done this on and off for years without any further issue. It only happens when very hot, working flat out and changing power quad shuttle at full revs. Might be a couple of times a day it happens. Don’t change gears at full revs normally but on the air drill it wasn’t avoidable.

Mine has done this for over a decade but only on odd days when drilling but it has never caused any problem in that time. Spraying, muckspreading, hedge cutting, rolling, flail mowing and hauling never happens. Don’t use it on drilling the last two years and haven’t heard it happen since then. My favourite tractor after.the 6800.

It seems to be something that's happening when the oil is very hot.... Just a thought, but is everyone who experienced this issue using genuine JD Hy Gard oil?

Yes its on HyGuard here too. But definitely only happens when the oil is hot and changing up or down at the same revs and only happens occasionally so hopefully it will be fine and just a quirk it has.

Might be the planetary rattling in the powerquad due to torsional dampener wearing or the engine mounts have dropped and misaligning the driveshaft and flywheel nose is worn and bushes in the torsional dampener hub are causing the driveshaft to vibrate. Either way get underneath it and see if the UJs arent failing and the driveshaft doesnt have a ton of movement side to side and up and down. Should only have say 2-3mm when they are in good condtion. Engine mounts the bottom cup shouldnt be hitting the steel casting.
