John Deere problem

Hi folks this is my first time on here, I was after a bit of advice or help. My 1996 model jd6800 has recently been playing up. Basically it keeps air-locking. I replaced fuel pipes, got pump reconditioned, replaced fuel sender unit and fuel lift pump and also the fuel filter. So after doing all that and after getting it bled and going the tractor will go for a short time ( could be 10 mins or could be 2 hours) but it will just stop dead. Then needs bled and goes again. Has anyone ever had the same problem or can anyone give me some advice please. Thanks in advance

We had a 5150 Maxxum playing similar tricks years ago. That turned out to be an inline filter had holed from vibrations on the chassis. Wouldn't run for very long after bleeding though.

I’ve changed the filter since this happened do you know if there is another filter that I’m missing then?

I have never fully worked out when the electric lift pump is powered and when not? Their not powered when the ignition switch is on,without the engine running, but powered when forward or reverse is engaged and switch turned to start position, the bleeding method. But the tractor can run ok with a failed lift pump, untill the filter is changed! I'm confused.

When you open fuel cap does air rush in. Blocked breather pipe can cause vacuum build up starving lift pump

The tractor is full of fuel so I’ve no reason to open the fuel cap. As for the breather pipe I’ve never checked but do you think this might be the problem??

From memory the 00 series pumps ran when ignition was turned on. Ours used to stick and needed a tap to get it going. As you said engine would run fine even with faulty pump until you let air into system.

Yes but how would the air be getting into the system when the tractor is working? And there is no visual signs of a fuel leak or am I missing something‍♂️

It’s a quick and simple thing to check once tractors been running a while. If it sucks in loads of air then it’s worth checking breather, if not don’t bother. Another clue would be if it runs longer on an empty tank than a full one.

6000 series run when starter is cranking only and on 10s and 20s and all later run with the ignition on all time apart from vp44 pumps which shut off with a pressure switch control
