Joining Plastic to old metal water pipe

So what’s the best way to do this?

Think there are adapters but seeing as the metal pipe won’t flex is difficult to just add in a T piece.

Maybe overkill.....but what about cutting an 18" section out of the metal pipe. Cut it in the middle and put in a plastic T to allow the MDPE to be connected, then replace the metal pipe back in place once more with a compression joint at either end.

Gives you three joints instead of just one, but makes for a simpler job.

Probably a bit small for a saddle type clamp.

you may have to take a bigger bit (couple of feet) of metal pipe out - replace that with plastic and put the Tee in the plastic section if you know what i mean

Yeah I had kind of resigned myself to that idea, really need some sort of slip over coupling that would do it in one.

Gonna have to get busy with emery paper to get a smooth surface on that rusty pipe.

If you know where the ends of the metal pipe are now might be a good time to do the job properly and replace the lot before it springs multiple leaks.....

don't fancy that one bit, its a job for a neighbour and reckon there must be 1000mtrs of metal pipe...... if it was mine and money was no object then bosh a new water main in lovely job.

Make do and mend is the aim of this job :)

thanks for the input guys,

If anyone has a new boiler fitted ,you will have no guarrentee if rusty iron is found inside the boiler due to iron supply pipe

You can buy a fitting that will screw onto the old galv pipe that converts to plastic, but you will need to put a thread on. If you do this, make sure you hold the galv with a stilson or pipe grip. I did this years ago and when threading screwed the galv off at the next join and had about 20ft to dig out :-(
