Bloody joint ill still hitting me, jabbing at least 2 or 3 lambs a day still, right fed up with it.

And is there a link between joint ill and spinal abscess?

I have never seen that but this year have had two in last coule weeks. Fine one day and the next morning off their feet and cant get up.

Im treating with a bit hit of Trimox LA and Metacam but not seeing much improovement.

Will be speaking to vets next week to see what they suggest as dont want tis next year.
same bug i think just lodged in different place , have you got them in ? want them contained really to catch them to give full treatment , (4 or 5 days) takes a long time usually get a flare up about a week after treatment then will need another couple days but most make recovery

No, they are all out, other than the coule with spinal abscess.

I mark down any I treat on phone and repeat injection as required. Most need just one jab, just a few need a repeat at 3 days.

Giving 3ml of Trimoz LA amd 1ml Metacam. Seems to be working at least.

It is mainly in the doubles, just a coule singles. So Im guessing related to colostrum quality? Not that I have done much different to previous years. Ewes have not been short on milk but maybe the quality is lacking for some reason.

And I was lambing right thru the real wet period, though navels are routinely done with 10% iodine when I tag lambs in first 12 hours.

Are you tailing/castrating them at birth?

The sun is the root of all life on earth.

When it's spent most of the past 12mths hiding behind clouds it wouldn't be surprising for there to be consequences.

Hopefully that won't be the case this time next year.

Since my ewes came in and (hopefully) until they go out, they're on our own hay made in blazing sunshine in early June, which I hope will mitigate things somewhat. Sheep outside, or on silage made in duller weather may not be faring so well.

perhaps dip navels as soon after birth as possible then again when you tag

yes probably , i have had real troubles with abomasal bloat in char lambs just started on creep , (rumen isnt going properly so milk goes in abomasum ) , yet never lost a zwartbles one ever ,so a lot prob down to colostrum quality , Do you think they could be picking up infection from tails falling off ? or is it youngsters from navel ?

Its at about 2 to 3 weeks old, so timing is at tail drop rather than little ones a week old

As much as it’s aPITA and you need a good catch dog 5 consecutive days of Synulox can have good affect although sadly there will always be some who can run like hell after but then relapse
It’s a sole destroyer

@Jerry We had a real bad go with joint ill in lambs born outside four years back. The ewes were hammered by bad weather and lost a good bit of condition between scanning and their Heptavac a month later. Conditions at lambing were OK. I put it down to reduced colostrum quality, as milk supply was OK. It was really hard work. Sounds like you're doing well keeping on top of it 👍

I have a batch of pure texel embryo lamb, born mid Feb. Just not on the thrive at all, would almost think they are a bit stiff but no obvious swelling.

Jagged about 10 of them with nuflor incase it’s a bit of joint

The later ones born in March/ April I never have any problems with at all which are lambed out or get outside straight away.

Maybe it’s a bit of cocci, but there’s no scour.

Talking to the vet who says that joint I’ll is mostly introduced through the mouth, dirty teats or sucks wool before finding teat. As its environmental cleanliness is very important. If it was through the navel then there would be more navel infections.

During our bad turn with it, it seemed that several cases also had infected ears so I suspect that the infection got in when tagging at about 12 hours old.

Any one any joy with treating erysipelas? They aren’t really bad but all seem to be stiff in a hind leg.
This was an early lambing batch and seemed to take it about 5 weeks old.
We are lambing now at the min, is it possible to vaccinate the younger lambs for it?
we were too late realising we had it to vaccinate the main flock.
