Kelpie x collie

Location

Thinking about getting a new pup and was wondering what a kelpie x collie would be like for working cattle and sheep and as a pet....wouldn’t need to be working sheep loads as we are a lowland farm
Also don’t like these small collies that people seem to be breeding...would the kelpie make them any bigger
Cheers

Got two here. Oldest fella is nine, and a pup of eight months.

The older dog has always been a grand worker. Strong on cattle but gentler on sheep. Thinks quick and is highly intelligent.

Pup is ferociously keen. Wants to do nothing but work, but is hyperactive and needs strong control. He's possibly the fastest pup I've ever had and is round the ewes before you've finished asking him to go. Like the older dog, he's another brainbox who thinks about things all the time. Loves winding the cats up and is often seen loping round the garden with an enraged cat after him!

Both dogs are beautiful natured. Ultra friendly and good with people. Pup is bloody noisy and a great guard dog - nobody will arrive unannounced with him around.

Older dog is a very small dog, pup looks like being much bigger, so it looks like there's a range in sizes.

As I keep telling Mrs NeilO, it's not the size that matters.... Corgis were originally cattle dogs (a few still are), but a lot smaller than collies.

All the Kelpies, and crosses, I've had anything to do with are bordering on hyperactive/nutcases. Great dogs but need plenty of work. I had a pure on trial and took him back. Lovely temperament but so hyper he would have done my head in (that, and he didn't have much of a stop on him, but that's the dog, rather than the breed). I decided I'd stick with collies.:)

My cross bred pups are mainly collie with a bit of kelpie and a touch of huntaway.

Dam is mainly collie with some kelpie, 16kg fit.

Sire is 1/2 collie 1/4 kelpie 1/4 huntaway 22 kg fit.

Pups are 16 weeks and 12kg.

I’ve had two still got one. They will run till they wear their feet out. Very energetic like barking at cattle and sheep under close contact. Both dogs would work sheep and cattle. Not as fancy as far as commands as a normal collie in my experience but better work ethic than some collies and much keener happier than some

From what I've seen and heard, the Welsh dogs work in a similar fashion to my Collie x Huntaways, although presumably there's more variation with the crossbred dogs.

There is a lad I know, farms a lot of cattle . . . . . has a very smart litter by a big strong welsh collie dog, to a huntaway bitch. Pups look great and both parents are brilliant workers, on a large scale enterprise. Also family dogs, he has kids etc.
