How does the ram work with a seal like this and what are they called?

That ram is a single acting, and effectively the lift capacity is only the area of the chrome bar diameter. That bottom "seal" is not a seal but there to stop the bottom of the bar scoring the piston, deals on the cap end only , that setup as single acting needs no vent.

I think it seals in the cap end rather than at the end of the rod. That seal is just to stop the rod rubbing on the inside of the tube

That's kind of what I was thinking about the seals being only in the cap but I didn't know that was only there the stop scoring the tube, thanks
