Kws funky winter barley

the problem is not widespread, nor endemic in that variety due to failure of uniformity.

But it's absolutely evenly distributed across all three fields of ours.

Very strange that one batch of commercial seed should suffer from intermediate ears naturally occurring in the breeding process and another to be completely free.

Now what do I do.

What I had intended to do was to insist that last autumn's Funky seed suppliers put in new seed for this autumn at close to our own cost of production.

The NIAB soon put a stop to any chance of that.

Now I'm just gong to ignore the problem, grow on our own contaminated seed, and wait to see what more's going to hit the fan about this, this time next year.

My agronomist is having a word with KWS. I’m sure I payed over £600 for that tonne of seed. Deter dressed. Home saving is out of the question. Some might say it’s only feed barley. But I truly belive it’s not the point.

My agronomist is having a word with KWS.

The very least KWS now need to do is to put out a statement clearly explaining quite why some batches of commercial Funky seed delivered onto farm last autumn contained a very large number of 2row off-types inevitably produced during their 6row breeding programme whereas others had absolutely none.

Cut our first field of Funky this year yesterday, ran about 4t/ac. Not quite so much straw as previous years, but not as little as we feared in the spring.

We have two good seed crops of Funky, one harvested light Norfolk 160T off 15.5 Ha, the other harvesting today. So very good variety and we have plenty of seed!

Just cut ours today, grain v dry (10-13%), straw still v green in places though. Million dollar question yield, the waterlogged bits (bust drain) not v great, the normal bits circa 9ton/ha, the really growy soil upwards of 11, will av about 9.5, but guessing slightly based on trailer weigher (which is calibrated)! Overall very happy, & lots of nice straw!!
