Lamb theft - Wiltshire

Just a heads up for you all. We live in Wiltshire, between Devizes and Westbury. This afternoon we caught red handed two teenagers trying to steal one of our lambs. They had a holdall with them and fishing line to, I assume, garrot the lamb. Luckily my son spotted them in the field chasing lambs. I ran after them and with help from some friends managed to detain them. The police were great and came on blues and twos and the kids have been arrested. While we were waiting for the police there was a black Range Rover sport, with bright chevrons on it, cruising around which we suspected to be connected. Social media has been great this evening and it appears that the car has been known to be acting suspiciously locally recently and is also known to originate from a travellers site near Trowbridge. The kids will be released under investigation this evening so keep an eye on your lambs and watch out for the car, it is pretty distinctive.

Glad they we caught. The arrest has been posted on the social media group for rural crime in this part of Wiltshire

Police won't do nothing. 'Chasing lambs' will get nowhere with CPS. Getting arrested isn't going to scare the children of dids.

Wilts police very active with rural crime it looks like 2 people have been arrested in this case. There is very good contact between the police and local farmers which seems to be having an effect. In my particular part of Wiltshire we have had a bad winter for crime particularly hare coursing. There have been a number of prosecutions, cars crushed and dogs seized. There is also a good relationship with the MOD police which have a significant presence over a large area of the county.

So credit where it’s due

Bg, what is the rural crime Facebook page where you saw the post about the arrest? It sounds like a group I should join. Thanks

The police have called to say that a decision has been made to take no further action, due to lack of evidence. It seems that you need a dead lamb in the bag before any action will be taken.

Why doesn't this surprise me? :banghead: :(

Sadly it's just 'par for the course'. In the grand scheme of things, I'm afraid sheep theft isn't something they have the time or inclination to take seriously.

All it does is send the message to the thieving scumbags that it's OK for them to do just as they like.

There was a lass on here last night (https://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index...of-sheep-rustling-or-illegal-butchery.313211/) looking for information to write an article. There's no harm in giving her your experiences.
Unfortunately there's a bit more going on in the world at the moment so I don't know if anybody will take any notice :(

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
