Landrover td5 over heating

I have got a td5 that’s just started making a ticking noise and getting hot quite rapidly ( normally takes forever to warm up) I assumed it would be the water pump so spent the best part of today changing that ( bloody fiddly job) but now it’s back together it’s no different. Any ideas? Guess thermostat next never had one go before but it doesn’t explain the ticking noise.

Take the thermostat out and try it without.

Pity you didnt do the thermostat when you were down there, you'll have to take the fan off to get at it, its in the lower rad hose, unless you destroy the thermostat inside the nylon casing you cant run it without it

From what I looked at in the manual it’s not that easy on a td5 but I might look next week. I Don’t like not winning first time after wasting a day on it.

I see its in a plastic housing , so you'll have to get a new one first.

You say it takes forever to warm up could that suggest the thermostat is stuck open? Probably not
Some years ago I was going to Welshpool market in our B2500 when I noticed temp gauge nearly in red so I turned the heater on full and in just a few seconds the needle went down
The problem was faulty thermostat

I once had a 206 that suddenly got very hot on the run home, to the point that it was raining and the bonnet had serious steam coming off it. No water in oil or vice versa, still the head gasket though.

When @czechmate 's baler broke he bought a new 1.
Umm, new ranger or something?
Whilst yesterday evening I could see the merit of that course of action I think I will carry on with the spanners I keep it because I can work on it so I will just take a deep breath and try again! Any way we are saving to buy a farm so that’s enough shopping for now!😬
