Half of our area is on an estate with an average field size of 25ha, much of it used to be orchards and there is a lot of piping under the ground which is starting to cause issues in places. Biggest field is about 60ha. Decent shapes aswell. The productivity is mega. Also have another farm with average field size of 6ha, output is easily halved.

Similar sizes here, 20ha av and largest field 80ha plus the Farms ring fenced, it makes a hell of a difference to output

Theres a 385 acre field in the Borders, split into different cropping.
If it wasn't for the farm drive splitting the farm in two, the remaining 135 acres would have probably been added to it...

Obviously not in England but in Montana we harvested on a farm that was once part of the largest privately owned wheat farm in the world at 90,000ac. We had the fields pre-loaded into our Greenstar screens and the names were simply the acreage.

The story of the farms is very interesting around the beginnings of mechanised farming.

One of the farms, Fly Creek Farm, was for sale at the time we were there in 2018:

I believe it is now owned or farmed by Monette Farms as they continue their expansion.

There was a chap called Greytak in Billings, who went big style sodbusting during the 1980s, grew a bit of an empire at the time, and then pulled back. Wonder if he was involved back in the day.
O.Walston visited the place, as mentioned in his Outbursts book.
My parents knew a retired AG Banker from Billings at that time, and Greytak was not that well regarded by the local ranchers, some of whom had experienced the Dust Bowl years.

I suppose if you go to the Highlands, there will be 'fields' tens of thousands of acres. 🤔

Not that productive though.
And not in England either.

Heard of a chap who was reputed to have rented 12k acres of region 3 in one “field”, ran bare minimum stocking levels in it to get the SFP. That would have been a nice cheque.

I know where that is, did you receive chicken muck from us ,use to deliver quite a lot around that area.
I’m not sure, I haven’t actually been here for long. There were pigs here once apparently and a large dairy herd before that I think
