Larsen Trap design

Talking t'other day about the design of larsen traps with a neighbour and the success rate of the different types of trap.

The top trap door was the type we always have had a decent success with, compared with the commercial side door type. Has anyone actually got a side loader to actually work?

Haven’t used 1 in years myself but always caught a serious amount with the side entries. Local gamekeeper does the whole area every April and in 3 hours he had all 4 with us with side entry.

The Solway Multi Larsen trap has three catching compartments around its edge, and a spacious call bird compartment in the middle. The side entry sliding trap doors are operated by a wire treadle which is situated inside each catching compartment. When a crow or magpie enters the trap, its first instinct is to hop onto the treadle, which then closes the door behind it.

You are now required by law (general licence) to secure the trap to the ground, 3 steel pegs are are now supplied. If you are trapping in Scotland you need to have a tag fixed to each trap with your authorised user number clearly visable. Recent tests by our staff have shown that while this trap is extremely versatile and effective in almost any circumstance, it is particularly deadly when used on open ground, away from trees or fences. The Multi Larsen Trap is designed to be able to deal with magpies and carrion crows, and the "multi" function can catch up to three times the amount of magpies or crows when compared to a conventional square or rectangular larsen trap.

To get started, your first priority should be to catch a call-bird. This is always hard, since a trap without a call bird is treated with suspicion by all the local birds. Either ask a friendly gamekeeper for a call bird, or catch your own using broken eggs or a decoy. Magpie decoys can catch crows and magpies, but crow decoys will usually only catch other crows. The trap arrives assembled and ready for use. Remember to check your trap at least twice a day and provide your call bird with food, water and a perch. For more information on current legislation as it relates to larsen traps, why not have a look at our recently published guide to larsen traps? we also have a blog piece on catching crows and magpie trapping; a brief guide to trapping crows and magpies.

The traps are made from 1" square 2mm thick galvanised weldmesh, and all are assembled in Great Britain on our own premises. Approx dimensions: 1010mm diameter x 490mm high shipping weight: 15kg Solway Feeders ltd accepts no responsibility for trappers who use these traps to catch non target species, or who use these traps outside the terms of the general licence.

A Brief Outline of Larsen Trap Legislation

The General Licence is issued by authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to allow the Larsen trap to be used for the control of Crows, Magpies, Jackdaws and Jays.

All Larsen trapping operations carried out under the General Licence must have a reasonable purpose. Simply hating Crows or Magpies is not a valid reason. Protecting livestock or crops is a valid reason.

The General Licence states that welfare requirements of the decoy must be taken into account. Decoy birds must be provided with food, water, shelter and a perch. As with all traps the Larsen must be checked at least once a day. The best times to check are one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset. Be aware that some traps can be filled with trapped birds many times a day, so keep checking during the day.

The Larsen trap is governed by a general licence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Captured birds provided they fall within the legal quarry list may be dispatched by an approved method.

Any non target species must be released immediately!

There is no set size to decoy cages.

When not in use Larsen traps MUST be rendered incapable of catching, i.e. no bird can push the trap door open and become caught as a result. Top opening traps can be turned upside down or have the door springs unhooked. Best practice is to store your traps when you have finished your trapping season.

Be aware that the set up in the photo would not be legal. The bird needs a perch, food and water. Also unless you want the decoy to get out then wire up his entrance, or some will learn how to lift up the door and do a runner.

It is easy enough to fabricate a perch and to fit a fastener to the call bird compartment.

As said above, these traps are deadly with crows And magpies. My only advise would be to get the larger (higher) trap than the one in the link. It is more expensive but has more space for carrion crows
