Latching Solenoid

Evening, quick question on the off chance - I'm trying to find where I can get heavy duty agricultural type latching solenoids that will be good enough for a swing trap holding about 200kg's. Plenty of them for house doors etc online but not really finding anything bigger. Its to go on a sprung closed opening gate.

Cheers, James

if im taking you up right, i had a similar issue here where i wanted a pair of them to lock a door closed, after some searching for an affordable option i came to the conclusion that the best option was to buy a pair of solenoids with a decent latching force and make up a linkage of my own that was strong and let the solenoid do the push pull work.
the solenoids are here but the project is still in the pipeline.
none that i looked at were very strong, they seem to all be made light enough round their frame.

Did you mean a shoot bolt style solenoid or a magnetic latch style?

Morning, thanks for the replies! I was looking for a shoot bolt style that would be sprung loaded so when the door closed it would re-lock and the solenoid just needs to pull to release. For some reason I thought I had seen and imagined something like it was readily available..

I took a look at the magnetic solenoid, thank you, its not really right for what I want.

RS online have got a selection, (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/automation-control-gear/solenoids/)

Something like might do what I need:

But yes it might be easier to make up linkage like yourself tinman. I don't know how much 12NM relates to in strength to open the gate when a bale is resting on it. Comes back to its probably just as easy to use hydraulic rams but I was trying to avoid pipe work to snag.

Bit expensive but allot more power: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/dc-d-frame-solenoid/3073590/

12Nm is equal to about 1.25 kgm, or 1kg is = to 9.8Nm whichever way you look at it.
So basically damn all..

You could use the likes of a small hyd power pack and a ram, be a dearer option but a lot stronger, like a trailer tipping unit.

What is it you want to do exactly if you don't mind me asking.

I think hydraulic is the way in which case with two small rams, I can run the pipes. Bale sledge, allot of our fields are pretty steep and I end up having to abandon the row and drive some distance to eject. Normally such light cropping if I can keep one behind me then I inevitably end up somewhere I can drop it off. Nothing exciting just would have been nice using simple sprung trap that self resets. Obviously I could use linkage for reduction on the pulling solenoid but rapidly gets complicated to fabricate :)

New Holland foragers had a solenoid on the metal detector that would probably work.

My brother bought a very strong pull solenoid recently to go on his electric gate,he’s the same problem as me when people force the gate open.:banghead:

External heavy duty magnetic solenoid latch here in stainless, good for 500kg. Any good?

Lasted about 6 months on my gate,I wouldn’t rushing for another.(n)

so if its pixies were using its going to have to be a 12v unit then so, going by that i suspect your options just got horrid limited.
in the case of a bale sleigh hyd pipe/s will be a lot more forgiving than an electrical cable.
