Late drilling / black grass

Is there any data any one has handy or experience that shows how different drilling dates effects blackgrass. Got a bit of medium/heavy ground that I’m leaving as late as a dare 😬😬and I’m thinking this might be late enough.

There is masses of very good data on this. THE best way to control grass weeds is delayed drilling followed by a stack of pre ems. It's not even a discussion anymore tbh

depends where you farm

early warm land can wait a lot longer than later land
the crop needs to be strong enough to compete and help the herbicides
many common in crop herbicides have poor control when the crop is slow and thin

Don’t move the soil bg
has had plenty of chances to germinate
once you move the soil more germinates
black grass has a very low germination rate 20 to 30%
undisturbed is even lower
When soil is undisturbed residual herbicides also work much better than the trials which are all done in a cultivated seedbed

Lee is right.no where near there yet. last year i drilled last week of Oct, first week Nov. best control ever on Very bad BG.
im drilling now, as although BG coming, ive lost my bottle. putting in deep without disturbing soil and will roundup/pre-em in 10 days time just before crop emerges. wont be as good, but 600g FFCT will help

Its a game of dare. Heads they win, tails you lose.

All I would say is its 12 Oct, so get it in , but keep the seed rate up and spend ££££ on pre ems followed by £££ on peri em on damp soils with good coverage. Do second spay in opposite direction to first to cover both sides of the clods
Or just get a set of angled nozzles or caps

I’ve never thought or heard of anybody doing this but sounds like a good idea. ThinkI’ll do it when I go through with my top up herbicide thanks.
We usually drive the opposite way for the second spray. In bad situations, if we have time, we will do it twice in opposite directions for pre em. Must be careful not to break any label rules on number of applications though.

I know detail here is key, so sorry for not being 100% on these dates, but there is data to show that end Sep sowings with a comprehensive pre-em can have more BG than untreated drilled end of October……. Pre-ems work better end of October too due to more moisture and lower temperatures. Fortunately my worst BG field is coming spring barley as nothing has germinated yet…

It can happen, if you drill a really bad BG field in September. I’ve found later drilled wheat can be better than a spring crop for blackgrass controls these days as a lot more seems to germinate in the spring now after 6 years of spring cropping
