Late grass

Change of plans, a field designated for spring barley is now going into grass post WW. Only just been cultivated, the question is should I try for a stale seedbed or drill soon and take out the volunteers with a selective herbicide? Cost of chemical vs good establishment of ley. Needs to be next week if drilled as WW the following few weeks. Thanks.

If it's only volunteer wheat your concerned about, tight sheep grazing over the winter will take them out (& tiller the grass too), and WW would grow so slowly that it won't smother any grass anyway. We used to drill SB seed in with the grass to provide an extra bite.;)

What selective herbicide? I was under impression that there was no spray that's licensed for taking wheat out of grass. Like the sheep idea though

If the grass doesn't go in next week then it won't until mid October, could spray off what's there now and drill in 6 days but those are the only options. The only good point is the lack of substantial amounts of volunteers.

mid october is very late for sowing grass UNLESS weather and conditions are excellent the clover wont germenate
as for why anybody would want to spray a new reeseed is beyond me, volunteers from the last crop wont do any harm

No pre harvest round up was applied and there was a degree of broadleaf weeds present, in conjunction with volunteers was the reasoning behind spraying it off. Just looking at options available and agree with all that has been offered.

What kind of grass is it? Westerwolds? That's all that will grow well if planted in October. I'd get it sown ASAP & ignore the volunteers for now. The grass will outcompete the wheat later on - it hates being grazed or cut for silage. I'd spray it now with 3 litres of glyphosate 360 g/l + water conditioner & sow in 3 days.

Thanks, I'll do just that. The grass will be a 3 year medium term ley to be picked up tomorrow.
