Interested to know if it is just one trader or are they all like this.
More than half my payments delayed by a few days beyond the normally reliable 28days.

are the 28days falling on weekends? Some banks take longer than others to clear funds. are all your payments dragging or just the odd load. Has this been happening for a while? Have you mentioned this to your grain buyer?

Not weekends, not the banks fault from what i can see just the office not processing it on time (intentionally!). most loads are now being paid late (say 3 out of 4 on average !). Has got worse this year, and grain buyer is helpful but it is still happening.... the latest 2 loads due for payment are gonna be at least 4 days late.

i was going to write a post moaning that as a contractor on average getting paid 5 weeks after invoice is now regarded as an extremely fast paying customer, but then I realised that you have laid out for the crop for 12 months!

How many is "a few?" The few merchants I deal with vary by at least a week, usually more. Some send remittance advice notes after payment, some before. This "28 days after movement" seems to be interpreted differently

I've stopped dealing with the slower ones. No names.

the other issue may be the company is doing a payment run, once or twice per week, which may see payment days fluctuate. If you are getting some a bit early, and some a bit late, this might be the reason, in which case it should all average out over a couple of days. However, if they are always late, and not just by a day or two occasionally, then you need to speak to someone who can sort it out.

Generally I agree with Grain Buyer, if its regularly late then talk to your buyer and if something is not amiss let them know if payment does not improve you will go else where. Alternatively ask for up front, cash and carry type contracts. Merchants offering those will not have any financial concerns.

Merchants and hauliers probably work for the smallest margins in the whole supply chain, making them the most vulnerable to the slightest delay in payment (whether through bad luck or an intentional squeeze) from further up the process.
