Howdy all,

just getting prices from our usual for some more planting this Winter - not done any for a few years, prices seem to have shot up.

for hedging:

233m of hedgerow with 40-60cm height bare root shrubs @ 5 plants per metre. Protected by 60cm spiral guards and supported by a bamboo cane.

species mix of 50% Hawthorn, 10% Field maple, 10% Wayfaring tree, 10% Guelder rose, 10% Dogwood, 5% Spindle and 5% Dog rose.

for tree belts:

Supply and plant 40-60cm height bare root trees planted at 2.5m spacing. Protected by 1.2m plastic shelters and supported by softwood stakes.

species mix of 30% Oak, 20% Hornbeam, 20% Birch, 15% small leaved lime and 15% wild cherry.

The job is for a screening hedge / tree belt and also just a tree belt to link to parts of the farm together for a better wildlife corridor.

Looking at over £5k but this includes a few other bits as well. Has anyone else recently had prices for similar please?

I cant fault their work, they have done a lot for us in the past but like to keep on top of current costs, based on this volume, its worth asking about a bit!

look on the woodland trust website, you can apply for funding and they pay 75% of the cost of the trees/guards, probably be about £200 or £300 for the hedging, then why not plant it yourself? 233 m would not take too long

We are doing a bit in the winter with the woodland trust. They are paying 60% of the cost of the trees/plants/guards and supports. We will do the planting. 300m of hedge and about 0.5Ha of woodland, split in 2 bits. I think in total about £1000 for us to pay for 850 trees and 1500 plants for the hedge, plus guards and supports. They came out and looked at the site and have designed a mix of trees most suitable for sites.

Doing 1000m this winter. All materials are £2900 (quicks, canes, guards). We are going to aim for 100m per day with two staff over 6 hours, so staff costs on top at about another £1250. Can’t recall variety mix but yours looks familiar. So all in about £4/m, possibly end up at £5/m if it’s a bit slower than expected. Your quote is £21/m which is ridiculous.

Their quote included marking out, supply and planting 450 odd trees and spraying off too.

I imagine reality is cost price will be £5. / m or so for the hedge

I would want better protection for the oak than what your suggesting.
In what way?

ah ok, good point, I see what you mean. I can understand when planting 10 but for 500 its not quite as commercial?

the ones we planted before in 1.2 tubes seem to look ok, they branch out better from higher up, that's all?
