Read it at lunch and I found it hilarious at first, but an afternoon hauling muck gave me too much thinking time and I’ve been getting angrier about it all day. I know it’s a total cliche, usually spouted in response to speeding fines etc, but surely there has to be more pressing issues to deal with than this!?

Is legal is'it as long as check regularly?

"Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wildlife Order (Northern Ireland) 1985, free-running snares arelegal throughout the UK, while self-locking snares are illegal. ... However, these terms are not clearly defined and a rusted, kinked or knotted snareeffectively becomes self-locking."

People do not help themselves much, do they?
I'm assuming that there is not a nomad site next to the school, so it must have been set by someone who should know better.

Based on a couple of assumptions really, that it was probably set in a small hole under the fence, and that children don’t tend to randomly stick their legs through small holes under fences.

I’m certainly not condoning the use of a snare in this situation, but I think that the message put out on fb was waaay over the top. It leads the under experienced and educated, over opinionated urbanite country dwellers to stick their noses ever further into the business of land managers, making life increasingly harder for these folk. Perhaps if needs be, a picture of the inappropriately placed snare and a stern warning on the legal uses of such would have been a lot more constructive than instigating a Highlands wide man hunt for a reckless and evil maniac. Could have been an old lady trying to protect a few hens for all we know.

But I really do think there must be better uses for their time than this.
