Leaving machines running when not in use

I had a bad habit of leaving gear ticking over for long periods usually because it had been drilled into my head to look after the turbos. I have learnt that there’s a lot of wear takes place when ticking over under no load splines and gears chatter back and forwards you can hear it

Cant remember exactly, but thought it took 3 or 5 seconds of running time fuel to actually start an engine. If the dark Chancellor has his way... there will be a lot less idling engines ....an hour is 3 to 4 ltrs of fuel, plus another £10 -£15 depreciation for that extra hour clocked for no return.

Think I read somewhere once that the biggest waste of fuel on farms is not switching off when you could do.
I like to keep it running, you either buy fuel or starters ring gear etc. Got caught out with the lorry one time as well, far from home and it wouldn't start so it gets left running now too, hated being 2 hours from home and not being able to get going

Its not only fuel though! Depreciation and servicing another major one with tractors being left idling. Tractors use very little fuel when idling if computers to be believed.

Should only clock hours above 1500rpm in my view.

Farm i live at has no sheds tractor will fit in. So have to park it outside. Generally start it up before i have breakfast to get engine up to operating temperature before going down road and so windows defrost. Be ten minutes a day. Then there's the dreaded gps. If i shut off tractor during a break i lose satellites so generally leave it running.
