So,leaving cost aside which would be better,Leica RTK from a local network of base stations or Trimble,Topcon, using omnistar hp/g2 or star fire using sf2.Needed for drilling corn and ridging spuds.

Silence speaks volumes......
Speak to the guys using the base stations already. Ask them if they would buy Leica again if starting from scratch.....
Failing that, I'll quote you a Topcon system

For pulling hills you should really have RTK. The others won't be consistent enough. All are fine for drilling though. I use SF2 for cereal drilling & rarely have any problems.

Here we find a lot of users getting on very well with SF2 for drilling cereals and beet and even got a lot of guys doing spuds even sf1 is a very good performer
We run a RTK network via the internet/sim card and all works very well for us with a starfire 3000.
Do have to chose the best SIM card for your area we use mostly Vodafone and orange /EE
Sorry can't comment on the Leica as have no experience

We have Leica rtk with a base. price did steer the way and have no regrets. The main reason for choosing was the virtual wrench, because the kit has a SIM card in it you can contact Leica if you have any problems and a person can steer you screen without coming to the tractor.

Bought a Trimble system here, influenced a bit by price and more than happy with it. Can't see I'd have earned back the extra of some quotes I was given.

Each to their own though.

Could you give examples where the virtual wrench has turned out to be useful? I sort of understand it is an advantage if other brands do not have anything similar but it also sounds like a disadvantage. I mean wouldn't it be better if you never had trouble and never need it?

I understand virtual wrench is useful for feature activations too, likely easier than with other devices but this you would not do often (or never if you start with sufficient capabilities). I'm sure there are other use cases that do not come to my mind.

19 months since last post but I just wondered what the updated opinions are on the Leica System. We bought a machine last year with Leica fitted and it's been a nightmare.

@zander83 pm me as I may be able to offer a fixed base rtk correction for that system. Not sure if your issues but if signal was one we may be able to cure it without changing all the hardware

Yes, they have said it's a Cellular issue and have since fitted and external modem to achieve better signal. We have days where it takes hours to acquire a signal and days like today, where despite having full signal, the tractor keeps almost losing track of where it is for a few seconds then steering back online.

Are they using Vodafone? Their signal has gone to sh** around here for data & voice calls. It's not just me - 3 of my staff are also on Vodafone & they can't make calls any more either using various different phones.

Was on Vodafone then they swapped to Orange, now to EE. O2 was always the best round here but last year, they dropped off. Now EE has seem to of done the same. The mobile phone coverage from all suppliers seems to have fallen away massively.
