Can anyone tell me how to get the top rotor bearing off so I can remove the locking collar and drop the shaft. Not enough room around bearing to get puller on. TIA

That's it. Bottom bearing is fooked. Long time since I last did one, seem to remember pulling shaft out of bottom housing to get at bearing and seals but there are 2 colletts (bit like valve colletts) under the top bearing holding shaft up.

Yes. You are right. I did several shafts over winter last year. IF I remember I think if you take of the bottom nut and tine holder you can knock the shaft upwards to give you a little more room to lift off the top cap.......possibly with a couple of taper drifts if you are careful. Lely bearings and shafts usually seem to be a lazy fit imo. The biggest problem is getting the top bearing out to release the collets. There is not a lot of room around it to get some type of puller on it. Careful when you take the bottom holder out. Always leave a srewdriver or a bolt or something in one of the four holes. Fishing the threaded plate up in the trough can be time consuming and very messy. Hope this does n't put you in a muddle ;0

Top cap came off easy but like you say, no room to get puller on bearing. Using guide pegs (10mm bolt with head cut off) at the bottom. Will bottom housing come off shaft or is there a step?

You got it. Just what I did with the guide pegs......I am thinking that the shaft has to be knocked down from the top after you have removed the colletts complete with the bottom housing and bearing. The spines that are driven by the internal gear are bigger than the bottom bearing . So....Four Allen bolts out underneath, top bearing cover off , top bearing off, colletts out then knock out the shaft from the top. Shaft should drop out complete with bottom bearing and housing complete. Its that top bearing thats a pig!

Just thinking deere66. That bottom bearing should come off ok with out taking the shaft out. The step as you say is on the drive spine above the bottom bearing. I had to replace the whole shafts when I did mine because previous 'mechanics' didnt keep the split pin in the tine holder and the thread or and spline got worn........Gas! :)

Progress report
Removed bottom bearing housing, needed puller but not too tight. Much easier to change bearing and seal with it off. All went back together so onto the next 1.

Bottom housing off again, change bearing, put it back on but bearing is tight on shaft. No amount of persuading would get into position so off with top bearing. Because bottom housing is off I can get a puller on top bearing. Remove the colletts, being very careful not to drop them and pull shaft right out. Press the bearing into right position, didn't seem as tight when it was out.

Replace shaft and bottom housing, all good so far. Then I dropped a f**king collett in the trough :mad:. I can just get my finger in and reach it in all the grease, rubbish, dropped it again so had to get my fishing rod (magnet on extending pen type thingy), bingo, got it, everyone needs a bit of luck some time.

More careful next time with collet and rotor no2 is now finished. 3rd and last tomorrow

Well done you. Been there and done all that as I guess many others have too. :) It's when the bearing breaks and you have to find your balls all covered in grease HA! Just have to make sure you have a pee BEFORE you start!
