We bought some Motorola P100 and a base station in 1993 and they were used daily, either on a belt clip or in a vehicle with a plug in roof aerial.
Now with the advent of the mobile phone they are just used during harvest and drilling where they are still a better bet than having to phone someone. We've never broken one in all that time so they are quite well built.
I suspect that the market for 'proper' handheld radios is somewhat diminished now that everyone has a mobile and with the relaxation of the laws allowing the cheap open frequency ones that don't require a licence. The cheap handhelds are OK but you are on the same frequency as the local baby monitors.
I think you can get mobile phones with a talk through feature that acts like a two way radio. I don't know how good they are, and of course everyone would need a new phone!
