lift pump for vehicle without one

I've changed the fuel filter on our car (S MAX) and it doesn't have a lift pump.
It's always been a pig to get the fuel back through but this time I can't get it to go and think there may be a poor seal on one of the connections or a split pipe.
Is there a pump I can buy to draw the fuel through the filter to get it primed ?
Any advice would be welcome.

How does it say go bleed it in the owners manual?

Try one of these

available at most motor factors

I had this trouble with a c max, garage told me to tow start it to get the fuel through. The only problem was that it was an automatic, had to resort to a couple sniffs of easy start. That sorted it.

Surely simply top off the filter housing with diesel, and turn the key?
I could not believe how simple it was to do the 1.6TDI Octavia, despite some of the stories on Briskoda.
Started absolutly first kick, and never even murmered.

Check the manual or ask somebody that actually knows what their doing!

There will be a priming bulb like the one posted above, or there will be a certain sequence with the ignition switch and throttle pedal that will tell the tank pump to self-bleed.

Taking something you don't understand apart is rather silly. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

I've been changing filters on vehicles for the last 30 odd years, and mostly on bigger stuff than this.
I've done this one half a dozen times before without too much trouble.
Having slept on it I think the air must be getting in somewhere.

30 years ago, the high-pressure pump wasn't in the diesel tank :)

If you find the problem, let us know. Every day's a school day (y)

I will add that I almost "went mad" with air getting in to the diesel, after I changed a fuel filter on the 12 year old Galaxy.
Clipped the dodgey ends of rubber hoses, murderously overtightened jubilee clips, smothered each disturbed joint in grease, still air bubbling through the clear tell-tale(for HMRC) fuel line.
Anyway finally concluded, against all logic or reason that it must be the sealed canister fuel filter itself that was leaking.
Pulled it off, blocked 3 of the 4 pipes and sucked on the 4th.
Voila, air getting in somewhere, probably a dodgy rolled seam?
swopped for another filter at the motor factors
and 100%
Fuc£k$%^&*()_t+ard

P.S.
re using a compressor as a vaccum supply.
There trouble at work with a community group running the brand new oil boiler dry, and it refusing to re-start after, despite a full fill of kero.
The very very competent handyman could not break the airlock.
The wee 5l 13A cheapo compressor was in his van.
I thought, hmmm?
pulled off the inlet filter, stripped back to a length of nom 1/2" pipe, pushed on a cutting of garden hose, other end of which was connected to the boiler end of the oil supply pipe.
And switched on.
It gargled and spluttered quite a lot, but.
Bingo!
Our H&S Officer would probably not have been impressed with the expelled mist of kero and air, inside the boiler room.
Fortunately the handyman was a non smoker.
but
It worked.
mth.

Up and running (y)
I took the filter apart and put it back together incase the two parts hadn't sealed properly.
I used the vacuum pump that mother nature gave me :yuck: I'd forgotten how bad diesel tastes .
No trade secrets or quick fixes just perseverance, it may just have needed time for the air to flush out of the filter element.
There is no pump in the fuel tank or lift pump under the bonnet. you have to find your own way to draw the fuel through.
Better still buy a car from a maker that isn't too tight to fit a lift pump ! They don't even give you a spare wheel, just a 12v compressor and bottle of snot.

quite a few cars now dont have a pump in the tank or a pump for priming through.
Audi A3 i believe is one
Volvos are another
Mondeo another.

instructions tell you to use an external pump to suck the fuel through and then reconnect the pipes and start up.
