Hello.

Can we spur off a ceiling rose to a new outside light switch? will the rose have a permanent live fed in to it? its new wiring, and no I cant ask the electrical because we previously fell out.

thanks FF

It all depends on where the rose is in the circuit, if you drop the rose and there are only 3 wires brown/ blue and green yellow then it is at the end of the circuit, and has had the live dropped to the switch first and then the switched live terminated at the fitting. If there is multiple browns in the rose then there will be a permanent live.

Are you wanting to switch the hall lights from another point?, if so its not going to be easy as the switches will have to be 2 way or intermediate depending on how many there is now, (the easy bit) also they will need another wire to them,(the hard bit). to make 3 core and earth.

I'm a bit of a b'stard on lighting circuits - I always use a junction box near to the fittings so that there's only ever 3 wires/1 cable going to the fitting - there are very few fittings that have suitable entries (in my opinion) for more than 1 cable. Many of the lighting problems I've fixed over the years have been down to roses being replaced or fiddled with resulting in poor connections, whereas the wiring in a junction box is less likely to get disturbed.
