on the outer edge of the farm are two mature lime trees.
they have ivy on them which i have tried to cut-successfully on one but i cant cut all round on the other as it would mean cutting from my neighbours side, something i wont do without permission(owner deceased within last year and youngers unknown quantity).
how ever
both trees are now dying-1 completly dead-with the second only leafing on the lower branches.they have died over a period of 3 years.i am experienced using a saw cutting the ivy so as not to injure the tree.cut ivy, wait to see if it is getting nourishment from another ivy node.it usually is a job done over a couple of years.when i started cutting both trees were healthy.a joy to wathch their leaves in a gentel breeze.
is there a disease equilivant of as die back or such hitting limes?i think they are the only limes i have on my estate so have nothing to compare.

It’s not the strangling that Zoe’s the damage but huge wind resistance they create

I always cut about 90% off so slow it right down but reduce leaf growth to help tree

Before you decide they are dead/dying and do anything extreme like fell them you could try a real severe pollarding. Limes can take it and it's surprising how fast they can come back. Got one here that was full of dead branches (tbh all the extremities were about dead) hammered it right back and it's like a new tree 2 years later.
Yours do sound a bit worse than the one here mind might have missed the boat
