Liquid N on spring barley

After some advice. Switching to liquid N for top dressing malting spring barley next year. In the past have put 30kgN on with the drill and remainder 90kg when tram lines just through.

Agronomist says we should put 50% of N on at drilling and remainder top dressed.

I was also wondering whether we should split the top dressing by a few weeks for the liquid N. We used to do it all in one hit as was reliant on a contractor. This year will be done by ourselves.

Thoughts re amount and timings?

Cheers

We put 140 kg n + so3 in liquid form on our malting barley, roughly one third pre em, two thirds early post. I would be a little nervous delaying the second post em application but I am putting 20 kg more on than you. Proper malting land though, if growing on heavy land to hopefully hit malting would cut rate by 20% depending on weather , drill date etc.

Split half pre drilling and half early post direct drilling here. The last dose needs to be on before tillering begins or you risk high grain N (protein) levels The only reason for doing 2 equal doses is for ease of logistics. It would be a problem if I had heavy rain after the pre drilling dose and couldn't drill for a while then the fertiliser leached away.

N25s @ 225lts ha plus N35s @200lts ha here as it was dry at drilling and getting late some had all just a day before drilling this year . No problems with propino n grain levels. All made the grade .

Only a small farm here so easy to do but I put all my 145kgs of N on in the same week I drilled it, Planet barley and all bar 2 loads have gone and perfect spec.
