On Saturday I had the honour of being asked by the Belted Galloway Cattle
Society to inspect three young bulls for @Tim G ’s neighbour

Afterwards we were kindly shown the pedigree Charolais Herd and the commercial South Devon cows run with a Limousin bull

how do people wit h pure charolais cope with the lack of milk? creep calves all summer?

thank you , yes we run pedigree simms, the calf are by Saltire Jaguar. with cows now mostly by a corskie bull.

just thought with charolais being a terminal breed they wont be very milky i prefer to keep sims for replacements over a charolais

Just breeding.
You have a pure beef cow with plenty of milk.Keep her heifers.
Cow with not much milk, you cull.
End up with milky beef cows.

do you just measure the milkiness by appearance or weigh the calves at 200 days?

Just take note of how full bag is and if calfs hungry or searching for milk.
Guess just know when a cow is short.

i find its hard to compare breeds just looking at vessel some seem to hold their vessel higher than ours but can fairly rear calves despite looking short

And without milking the cow, it's difficult to know what the quality is like. What are % like for bf and protein? One cow might be producing large volumes of poor quality milk and vice versa.
Got some cows here that appear to have loads of milk, but their calves don't always do that well, and others you look at and wonder of they have ever done a lactation, but their calves are the best and never seem to be hungry.

That's what I mean.
No rule to it. You just know.
Calves growing well and not hungry, then getting enough.
Blondes definitely seem to have a high bag.

Long way to go for a bull. Rawburn ones no good? Hell of a lot nearer. Just noticed Blelack farm for sale.

This year's bulling heifers, hopefully all settled in calf. Bought in blue x dairy, and some homebred 3/4 lims and lim x blue

We don't bull anything too shapey and I know what you mean but can't kill them all. I'd like to improve our cows so want a bit more beef to them. Blue heifer should make a nice cow. And a blue over the 3/4 lim types should leave some nice cattle to finish.
