Livestock trailer insurance

This is just a heads up warning to everyone that doesn't insure their livestock trailer.........it is not insured when it is been towed if you insure with the NFU !

Every trailer is automatically insured on the tractor policy when towed.....EXCEPT livestock trailers....... and the same with towing trailers behind the farm pick up.....EXCEPT livestock trailers.

Unfortunately a local farmer didn't realise this until he turned his tractor drawn livestock trailer over.

Always been a quirky thing with the mutual, anything a tractor tows or is attached to is covered except a livestock trailer, unless it is specified on a policy , cheapest place is usually by adding it as a specified item on the tractor policy, it is then insured whatever or whoever tows it tows it.

If your local farmer is caught out, he should find out when or if his Group secretary ever told him he did not have the correct cover. Its madness which the bods in Stratford wont move on despite many insured's being caught out each year, especially as tractor drawn floats are more popular now, silly thing is take the box off and the trailer is insured.

Other companies seem to have more sense though. CCiB Royal insurance Motor tractor covers the livestock trailer but only when towed by a vehicle insured on the policy itself , Lend the trailer to your mate and its not insured

Mutual car policy covers any trailer attached upto £1000 , has done so for years, (time it was increased perhaps), the exclusions however include caravans, catering trailers and livestock trailers(n)

Like many insurance policies, they offer to cover everything then throw in exclusions as needed.

Also learned last week that livestock are not insured in a shed for snow or wind damage unless it is specified ! Dont just presume they are covered!!

Yes i had this out with the NFU as i have a timber shed which creaks when its covered in snow, we house cows and calves in it,it appears that the shed would be insured if it collapsed but if any cattle were killed they would not be I MUST SAY TO ME IT SEEMS MADNESS. what they didt tell me is why .

So my caravan ain't covered

No needs to be added to your house policy or a stand alone caravan policy.

perhaps they have been screwed too often with silly valuations for the stock within the trailer, there is always goods in transit available.

Livestock in transit is another thing, but Mutual standard cover is now £10k load limit ( unless you specify higher),enough for most IW trailers and even for most tractor floats.

The third party liability is compulsory under the motor policy, be that tractor or whatever, so if your tractor float overturned or came off and hit a third party, your own damage is not covered but any injury or damage to someone else would be.

Strict 3rd party liability cover, as given by some cheap motor insurers only covers 3rd party injury, not property damage

When I asked other brokers to quote, livestock in transit cover and the exlusions set within my towing policies were those that appeared to have slipped through the net with NFUM. These perils are covered now, elsewhere and for a lower premium

I insure my Freelander with NFUM, and the Ifor Williams stock trailer is automatically included as its valued at less than 1K. But that wouldnt cover livestock in transit would it. I need to find an insurer who will. Any advice appreciated.
