Lump on tups head

About 6 weeks ago my Texel tup got this lump just behind his eye, it was causing pressure behind his eye so I lanced it, flushed it out with iodine and gave pen strep for 5 days. It healed up nicely but there was still a small lump, in the last few days it has started to cause him uncomfort again as he's grinding his teeth. This time there isn't any liquid in the lump. I have given pen strep again, can anyone recommend anything else? Thanks

Poor fellow!

It could be an abscess that needs lancing and a peroxide wash, but the nerve that controls chewing is v close to it, and I wouldn't try it, personally

Is the part of the lump that's in line with the corner of his mouth soft at all?

If it is, then gently insert a short (½") sterile wide bore hypodermic needle upwards into it (aim the needle away from the cheek, iyswim) to see if there's pus there. If liquid issues, let in a little nick at the entry point and let drain there.

Probably needs a Vet if nothing happens.

Hope it's nothing worse, such as a tumour or that infection of the glands (sorry, the name eludes me at the moment).

Thankyou for reply. Yes there is puss there, it is draining from where I lanced it and flushed it a few weeks ago. Doesn't seem to be causing him any pain today, will carry on with a longer dose of antibiotics this time I think. If that fails vet it is. Thanks.

I have a tup with an abscess similar this now , did you get to the bottom of what it was? slightly concerned about CLA after reading previous threads on here. he was fighting with another tup about a month ago and had a lot of white puss on top of his head from the large graze he had about 2 weeks ago but that has now cleared up but hoping its possibly just due to abit of left over infection from that.

From the above, it seems to be spread by contact rather than sperm. Tups, mainly those with with head wounds are more likely to catch the infection from contact with an infected tup, mainly through fighting.

So: (1) Check the tup for CLA, (2) cull immediately if it's infected, and (3) test all other sheep for similar swellings and cull any that test positive.

But if you're as idiotic as the other Marlon Dingle, you'll take no notice.
