Machinery dealers

How many of you find that when you ring about a price of machinary and are genuinely interested you find the dealer sells it from under you using an excuse I ring you back tomorrow with details and in the mean time sells it to another customer and then hasent got the manners to let you know they seam to have lost all idea that the customer could return another day

If you were to hold machinery because some stranger phones and says he's coming to buy it , dealers yards would be packed full of reserved machines because most don't turn up. I had a man here in the yard two weeks ago looking at the fencing stakes I sell , he picked out the best two bales and told me to keep them for him and he would be back in two days with the trailer , 10 days later still no sign , I've let the stakes off to men with money in their hand. That's business .

First come. First served. First to pay. When it's gone, it's gone.

They just can't rely on ''I'll think about it".
This sadly ^^

I’ll hold something for half a day but that’s about it. If someone rings up in a morning and says I’ll be there later today then I wouldn’t sell it in the meantime. If he doesn’t show which 50% of the time is the case then it’s back on the market.

Farmers seem to be naturally indecisive. How many times at a sale have you seen someone (usually a dealer) jump in and beg something cheap on a spur of the moment decision then all the farmers start moaning about how he got it too cheap

A salesman told me about a tractor with was coming in from a deal he'd done and whether we'd be interested, we were and offered to look at it on farm (local farm which we know), he told us to wait til it comes into the dealers yard, a couple of weeks later I asked him if the tractor had come it yet and he told me he sold it to someone else from the farmers yard!!!
Not dealt with them since

That was exactly the experience I was trying to explain and yet tonight another dealer returned my call so I can confirm there are some good dealers

The easiest way is to do what a lot of other industries do and just take a small deposit otherwise it’s first come first served. Last car we bought was a demo from a bit away so was more than happy to pay £100 over the phone rather than find by I got to the dealer the “ other salesman” had just sold that motor and wasted my trip.

I had one a few years ago. I phoned about a plough and told the salesman who was also the owner of the dealership I would be down to see it late morning as we were a fair distance away and I would be leaving home at 6 am. We then had a problem at home so I phoned him as soon as they opened to say I would be late and it would be in the afternoon and was that ok? He told me he had sold the plough the afternoon I phoned which is fair enough it was his to sell but he didn't think it was worth a phone call to say it had gone knowing that the first I would have known about it would have been after a 300 mile plus trip. He then said the deal was almost done when I phoned again this wasn't mentioned at the time. After some choice words on both sides I left it there with him still thinking he had done nothing wrong. some people are just bell ends and you have to learn to live with it.

Just to put the other side of the story and it’s no reflection on anything posted above.

I was getting short of spare cash and needed to get something sold so had a £3500 machine advertised.
Man A rings up 3pm, can he come and look next morning. Yes no problem. Seemed genuine and local so said I’d hold it.
Man B rings up 4pm also wants to come next morning. Told him someone was coming but he was first on list if he didn’t come.
Man C rings 6pm. Says he’ll buy it at asking price, send invoice and he’ll pay bacs straight away. Tempting but I’d given my word so he was 3rd on list.

Man A came as he said, did the deal and off he went with invoice and would pay bacs later that day. He did but only a £200 deposit at which point I’m a bit screwed without wanting to be impolite to the man.

He eventually paid the balance 3 weeks later when he fetched it.
Hence the reason I won’t accept deposits any more.

I've got no problem with first come first served, but this dealer was willing to let me drive 300 or so miles knowing I was wasting my time. If he sold it to someone else then fair enough but he was a bell end and there is no argument about that. What would have happened if I had got there to find out it was gone?

Dave w, if you had that much interest you should have said to e guy that bought it all money upfront or nothing, you had a plan and a plan c! However I do admire your honestly and integrity... sadly few share your morals

If somebody wants a thing, they should buy the thing. It's not the dealers fault if a real, paying customer turned up while the first chap was dithering.

I'm absolutely straight and candid with everyone I speak to on the phone - if you're sure you want it, pay for it. If you're not sure, I'll hold it if you get in the car and come right away. If you call on Monday but can't come until Wednesday, I won't turn away a buyer on Tuesday.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and all that jazz.

That got me in a bit of a panic, rang about a tractor a local dealer has advertised about a month ago, it's still on farm, with new tractor sitting in dealers waiting for front linkage to arrive imminently, said they'd ring when it came in. I haven't heard anything back yet so just went and checked, it's still on their website, think I'll give them a ring tomorrow just to remind them especially as it's a firm I haven't dealt with before.

If you are serious, arrange to go and see the tractor on the farm and get it bought before someone else does so from under your nose. I'm only saying that it is a possibility that you should guard against if you want it, or think you want it if its as described. On the other hand you can gamble that you are the only prospective customer for it and nobody else will do what I describe. Usually and for most things there's no great hurry, but its not unusual for someone keen and proactive to get the deals. That stands for all minds of deals including land sales of course.
