Mains Energiser

We use a solar set up to run about 6k of high tensile electric fence wire.

But we are running a water pipe there from the farm its about 400m and wondered whether to put an electric cable in the trench?

Would i need to use armoured cable? Would i have too much voltage drop?

What size wire would i use?

Thanks

Have a look at this

I plugged in a low amperage - 5amps - assuming an energiser would be low and this came up with 16mm squared, which is pretty small stuff and relatively cheap. However if you go up to 13 amps it get seriously thick😀

For example this?
Yes,ideally you want the full 400m in one coil or you’re needing resin joints every 100m,only put mains cable in if you need a mains supply where it terminates.

All the lead out cable has a long lead time, i can get 3 core 2.5mm armoured cable, in a long single length.

This would do the same thing?

If you are not sure now exactly what you want to do and rather than hold up the water pipe job, then how about just lay a piece of pipe or something as ducting in the trench ,could even put in some warning tape inwith it i guess and leave /fit a string line through it then you can add (pull through) whatever sort of wire(s) at a later date.

another way of doing it if its just for the fence energiser is to use a 12v power all the way from a 240v power adaptor at the mains /buildings 13amp plug end, whatever ,
400 m of low voltage low voltage in ( decent sized wire with
respect to resistance yes,) instead of high.
it wont need to be armoured just put it in a bit of plastic water pipe or something to duct it .it will be safe even if mistakenly dug up or something what ever.

Ive done the same and used long length of dc wire left over from a solar site instal. but it wont be high amps either some 2 core ordinary wire might be ok ,just do the maths on resistance ove r that length by what ever power the energiser will need .

it means you wont need to buy a mains fencer either just carryon useing the one you have .

setting a mains energiser back at the mains point then running out a lead out wire all that way will be expensive because it needs double /really good insultaion and be fair sized because of the high volts involved and of course adds 400m to the fence line and possible short risks / resistance loss es if that lead out wire isnt top notch.

having said that a good panel set up for a lot of fences will still be the way to go imo and ime , can get really good high joule 12v energisers these days

Yes,it would be fine, join all the cores together, how much per metre?

Or this

not as a lead out cable no, because of the high volts involved will end up shorting and be loseing power etc. somewhere along the line. proper lead out cable for low resistance and high volts is big single core wire with double thick insulation .

Or this
but thats rated 600 to 1000 volts as per its intended use whereas a good energiser could be kicking out 12 000
