Mains water leak

Lost some pressure in the yard and found a leak (not drastic) on the main tap at the end of the drive. See picture. The tap sits the road side of the water meter obviously so is that waterplus or is it our problem? The leaking water isnt going through the meter obviously so we arent paying for it.

Over here (NI) it's pretty cut and dried, anything up to and including the toby is water company, anything after is the responsibility of the customer.

Hopefully they'll thank you for finding and clearing around the faulty area when they come out to fix it!

Their issue, get it reported. When the ground crew turn up offer then some help, take your digger if you have one, make them a brew and get a couple phone numbers! Invaluable when you then get a leak on your side and you can’t find it. The call centre is as much use as chocolate fire guards but the lads can be very helpful.

Same here (NS). Water staff when searching for a big leak two weeks ago found our toby (72 years old) leaking a little.
Yesterday men came and dug out and replaced with aplastic assembly.
Said they will be back to replace paving's and make good.

Several weeks back, leak appeared in roadside, neighbour reported it.
2 weeks later someone called and cleared around it and marker sprayed it.
Few days later someone came to have a look.
Nothing happening so neighbour calls again, informed road closure needed which would take 90 days.
Neighbour asked all of the locals to report low water pressure, which we did.
Came and fixed within two days

If your not paying for it it's not your water not your problem
not so sure of that.

we had a spur off the main, that supplied 2 houses, and 1 trough- metered. Leak occurred before my meter.

they billed all 3 supplies, for the cost of repair. My attitude was feck off, its before the my meter. And refused to pay, stating my responsibility was after the meter, and didn't pay, the two houses had to.

checked with NFU after, and apparently, because it was a spur, off the main, all three of us were liable for the repair. Which l didn't agree with, but one presumes they know what they are on about.

we had a 800 metre line from another meter, that was causing trouble, went through some stony ground, had some leaks, one leakage allowance only. Pipe ran through 3 different properties, and the road verge.

when we pressurised our new borehole system, could push the water up to the fields it used to feed, then closed the supply. Water bills since, have been drastically reduced, bore hole paid for itself in 9 months.

I had an identical problem with Thames Water - stop tap on their side of meter was leaking, and wouldn't turn off fully either, which was a problem when we had a leak inside the yard and couldn't get the water to shut off 100% to fix it. I spoke to TW and they said they had no statutory duty to supply a working tap, that was my responsibility on my side of the meter. But as the tap was their side of the meter and was leaking they'd put it on the leaks jobs list. And eventually they replaced the tap and the meter (or rather took the old meter out and fitted a plastic housing for a new meter, but haven't fitted that yet, so I've been getting unmetered water for the last 3 months, happy days :D ).

here its in the water regs to have a positive stop on your incoming supply,

Broadly similar here, only the water company will simply bill the account holder for the amount of water going through the meter and if that's shared between two or more parties then amongst them be it to sort it out.

To be fair, I can see their reasoning.

Trying to sort out things between private individuals all of whom will claim to the death that it's "not my problem"* would be a road to no town.

* - obviously in your case you had a meter to prove your case if it had gone legal, smart move! (y)

I went to find my metre yesterday and it's been buried by a team who put some new cables in the verge. 😡

(Edit, I know if I can't find it then they won't either, but that's not my style!!)

Doing some research last night, will a cat scanner find it? It's a plastic meter and box, but pretty sure it's a metal pipe at the bottom!

Their side of meter their issue only becomes yours after it's passed through the meter. If the water causes flood damage to your land claim and make your teeth meet.

Its quite possible they were BS'ing me 🤷‍♂️ but what can you do when a large company just flatly refuses to play ball?
Because the boys in the vans inspecting ,have been told to accept no responsibilty for anything ,my plumber who is a proper regs man is going to find that piece of regs and i will stick it up the next blokes nose

If the lid is up to spec there will be a metal plate attached just for ease of finding with a CAT scanner or metal detector.
If the metal pipe runs uninterrupted to your place and you can attach the genny to it then you can back-trace the pipe to where it turns into plastic. Then you will know the run and possibly any spurs but only if these are metal.
