We use Xero, which is an online accounts package, and find it very easy to use for £11* per month. It has advanced functionality should you require more later but you don't have to use all the functionality just the bits that you need and it will report your VAT to HMRC as required by MTD.
* There is a £5 per month 'Starter' subscription that is limited to only 5 invoices and 5 bills per month that can submit your VAT. If you deal in foreign currencies you will need the Premium £13.75 per month subscription.

I just started with Xero today.
I have been using another accounts package for years named after a herb - I have never liked it but Xero was brilliant compared.

There's a thread on here which suggests the costs are significantly higher than those for Xero etc, not sure if that's actually the case though as I haven't looked into it.

There’s a one off up front payment for the software with a 20% discount for nfu members. Thereafter a 225ish per annum fee includes updates and helpline / support.

I've started using Pandle for which the basic version is free, however if you are unfamiliar with double entry accounts any digital system is going to seem complex. I haven't used the digital VAT submission and will be trying it at the end of the month I will have a better idea of what I think of it then.
We've just got it, but have yet to try it, looks very easy to use

Used Tax calc vat bridging software for first time. Needed some help from helpline through my stupidity, but worked OK after help from "Diane". Excellent backup service.

There's always a grant for something in Wales .
The only one I've seen is as an item available on the Farm Business Grant. Does the similar English scheme not have that option as well?

I presume it's the Farm Business Grant? I had a look and it seems the application date has passed. But perhaps it'll have more slots in the future? https://gov.wales/farm-business-grant-application-dates

That grant also specifically excludes subscription payments iirc, so would rule out Xero or Quickbooks.
