Malting barley shortage

Quickly approaching the end of optimal timing for spring barley planting. Although the planned area will be substantially higher than normal how much will now get drilled vs a catch crop and what does get drilled will surely be at risk of being poor quality. Another 8mm today FFS!

We are on traditional SB chalk, there’s plenty of years where we drill late March so no panic here yet, we didn’t start until the 23rd in ‘20 and was fine, in ‘18 after Beast from the East we drilled some end of March and the rest in April and it all went for Malting

I think it’s likely that less will go in on heavy ground if it looks like an April window and the same is happening in France so Malting Barley may not be quite as plentiful as first thought

All the malsters here are talking about carrying more barley over into next season anyway as the demand has slowed from their predictions.
Yes, even at the stage where they are making you feel lucky if you are signing up for a new 3 year contract as demand not going to be there for next couple of years. Might not get offered one then:rolleyes:

I'm still supposed to be getting the last 2 loads of a 2023 contract away at some point . They have told me it's not really needed as locally stores are all full up , so I'm not pushing as would rather they call wanting it than I demand it's lifted to get a rejection.

Unfortunately also have 400 ton or so in sheds and can't even get a bid on it for malting from anyone so I can't see the malting job being any fun this year , whatever happens

Think is if we have a rubbish growing season and crap yields they may come looking. They have just come off the back of 2 good harvest years.

Well when they build this new maltings there's going to be demand for another 100k tons of malting barley.

There will be a article on it in the P&J when spring arrives encouraging us all to sow spring barley for malting like lemmings again.🤣
First year there hasn’t been for a while. Strangely coincides with there being no seed left:ROFLMAO:

Following this up, how has progress been across the U.K.? We’re drilled up cereals wise and will put peas in tomorrow, we’ve been very wet but fortunately have had a few dry days. Looking at the national forecast I guess a lot of barley won’t get drilled?

Hardly a field drilled in Eastern Scotland. Another yellow weather warning for rain on Tuesday so looking like at least mid month before most get a start.

2018 was similar. I Didn’t start then until 23rd, then straight into a 6 month drought. Could see that happening again as been 6 months of non stop rain now. Surely has to even itself out. Have never sown in May before but that would probably be cut off between drilling or not.

Aye it is not looking bonny.
Any consolation have sown in May after swedes for sheep.
No great but not murder either.
Wondering what some tatties guys will do when weather turns, both in priorities (tatties or cereals) but also the state of some tattie fields. Some look possibly unworkable, late oats or possible stubble neeps into some.
