Massey 3070 with A/B gear box

A friend of mine has a 3070 with the A/B box. The tractor is in very good order and is certainly a keeper as it’s only used for hay making each year.

I’ve heard about when the A/B goes wrong it’s pretty nasty. Is this a costly thing to check and / or replace before it may go wrong? Or false economy - and just keep everything crossed that it doesn’t fail.

We had a 3080 with the same box and never had any issues with it until one day lost the B range without any warning. As you can guess it required a gearbox rebuild. Only advice I can give is when changing from the A to B range and vice versa is to have the other gearstick in neutral

We had a 3080 with the A B gear box in its first year ,it went wrong 3 times before the dealer got mad with it and welded the nut on the selector shaft ,,it kept unwinding itself and letting the selectors move out of line ,,it was on the farm for 18 months ,got swapped for a 3120

We had 3080 32 speed. Always stoped dead when changin ab stick. Left with round 15000 hours never touched gearbox. Drive her right she should be ok

If you are buying, think about what tasks you are going to do with it?
Changing from A to B or B to A on the move is to be avoided, so realistically you will only have access to the top 4 gears when on road work.
Moving about with light tackle will be fine, but hook up a big laden trailer and try using it in a hilly area and you are asking for trouble.

Hi iv a problem with my Massey 3080 datatronic
The B gear goes fine but when I put it over to A gear it goes forward in reverse and reverse in forward. Also stays in high gear even when in A gear. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok. I know of one locally that was recently traded with the same problem.
My thoughts were sticking a/b valve and wear in the interlock mechanism of the a/b. f/r selector
