Massey 590 Hydraulics

We are just reviving an old 590 that's been parked up for a few years and we have decided to get round to fixing one of the problems that led to it being parked up in the first place.
The rear arms won't lower when the levers are moved. they only way to lower was to turn the tractor off, raising was never an issue.
We removed the inspection hatch yesterday and noticed that that the vertical lever and the Roller were not always making contact. I wiggled the roller and it seems a little better now as it will lower but only when a little bit of weight is placed on the arms. Its still not right. Should the lever and the roller always maintain contact?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Regards

Would it have been run on constant pumping without anything attached? I know from experience certainly on older MFs that the needle valve can get hot and stick, or had happened on a 565 I bought the connecting linkage had broken.

Our 590 had an issue witht he hydraulics - the assembly which the control valve was in (sorry, cant describe it very well) was not machined perfectly and started to stick.
Id suggest pump out and give it an overhaul - a kit is quite cheap and then the hydraulics will be like new.

a good couple of hours or so. Maybe abit more as youve not done it before.
However. Just a thought.
Is the PTO shaft held in with a circlip so that you can change it for a 1000 rpm shaft?
If so, you need to split the tractor behind the gearbox.
If not, you take the top cover off and bring it out the top.

just a 540 on this one so it looks like out the top. ill have look around and see if i can find a guide.

Thanks for your help!

You can keep the hatch open and start the engine, keep the amount of oil inside that don't run out. Then press the lever on the pump towards tractor front. If the arms come down, everything should be OK in the pump. I think you can take the lift cover off and take it to some repair shop, that can adjust the system in it. There's some info, this 565 is a bit rare as it's not with IPTO, but has the 1000 rpm PTO option:

That 699 can be more like your 590 inside:

Sorry I missed your last message, looks like your 590 is a bit different.
