Massey 698 PTO broken

The PTO on our old Massey 698 won’t engage this afternoon. Bit of a problem as it is on the feeder wagon.

Any ideas what’s wrong? Clutch pack plates?? How to repair it, split the tractor, cab off??? Be nice to be able to repair it without having the cab off, not sure it would ever go back on it’s that rusty!!!

Unless it is the external mechanical linkage that is broken, it is almost certainly a cab-off job. Most of the guts of the rear transmission must be removed to access and repair the PTO on these tractors. It is not a two minute job to say the very least. Big job!

Has the clip that holds the pto in broken and the pto pulled out of the tractor a little. Ours did this once

It's a split the tractor job to get the pack out. No need to take the cab off, I think:

Of course could test the pressure of the pack first. And if the lift doesn't work, then the splines maybe gone near the flywheel.

It just stopped all of a sudden. Worked fine in the morning, not working in the afternoon. All other hydraulics work fine.

The PTO brake hasn’t worked properly for a while. It wouldn’t drive the feeder when empty with the PTO disengaged, but if you disconnected the feeer PTO shaft it would spin. With hindsight this it what has probably knackered it

if the brake hasn't worked for a while and it stopped suddenly, ill guess the brake pad has worn completely through the clutch drum and it has fallen in half. check for 230psi from the little plug in the middle of the Q/R coupler support plate when the ipto is engaged.

Yep, definitely check this. Shaft is designed to be easy to pull out as it is swapped with another shaft for 1000rpm.
