Seem to be more of a problem every year around this time.what are people using to take them out or would a higher rate of stomp/picona in autumn be more effective?

I don't think stomp/picona does much for them but I may be wrong, used to see it about (along with groundsel) where I had used these products.

If you switch to half rate crystal or similar (approximately similar money or it was) you should get a little better control of these but in reality mayweed is readily sorted in the spring with some of the contact products. Almost a nice problem to have in reality. Don't let them get too big though.

Same here every year I get more of it. It comes through autumn PDM and dff, picolinafen is supposed to be better but not good enough. Ally max sorts it but so does a lot of other stuff, I think from memory tribenuron is the strongest SU, florasulam will do it aswell so will arylex it just depends what else is in the crop that needs sorting at the same time.

I can't remember which but you can partner a bit of phenoxy (dicamba???) with the (reduced rate) ally or similar if the weeds get big. I have done this in the past where I have big surprises looking at me that someone has pulled out of a ditch/headland/hedge or whatever. Done at the right rate and timing/weed size you get a good clean up.

Bit of speedwell and groundsel too so ally prob the best or have used chekker in the past to good effect.
Zypar didn't touch them a couple of years back may have been on the large side for it

Brittox where are you now.....? ;)

Remember this coming on sale and the mayweed problem on this farm disappeared overnight. Mecocrop wasn't it, with CMPP or something??

Probably mecoprop (CMPP) which was used a fair bit back in the day, I used to use it as a mixer from time to time but to be honest BLWs were rarely a huge issue for me. Even grass weeds weren't a huge issue in the crops I looked after, not compared to the grief experienced elsewhere in the UK.

Bromoxynil and ioxynil were both useful actives in their own right as well.

Brittox had the ester formulation of Mecoprop which was volatile and had the ability to kill beans on the next parish.
It was replaced with Swipe, which had the more stable salt formulation.
Think both also contained ioxy/bromoxynil.

Oh yes, on a warm day, it sure was volatile, you could smell it from miles away.

I seem to remember being told to apply it late in the day "when possible", because of the propensity of the actives to travel. Toms were also vulnerable as I recall?

😁when I look at my weed burden and chemical spend I wounder what message nature is trying to get across to me.
The massage from Mother Nature Please can you help me !
To lift my PH levels allowing me to perform better to grow better cereals crops and out complete with weeds.
There is lots of weeds that start to grow when PH levels start to drop and mayweed one of them
This is quite basic botany.👍🏻😀

Every field tested every other year, thousands of tons of muck spread and alot of pH of 6.6 and 7, just a very high weed seed burden where so much organic matter is added.
I done think a crop will ever out grow a cleaver.

You are correct. Cleavers love high N environments. Cleavers are the most yield sapping weed by some distance on a plant for plant basis.

Probably nature saying: 'please stop growing wheat for a bit'.

It was a signature smell of my childhood.
People obviously much wealthier than us, used to chuck some Swipe in with the Dicurane/Hytane in the autumn, if there were big weeds present. Sure it was on the label; and they were all Ciba Geigy products.

Mayweed and particularly groundsel seems to be getting more of a problem every year. Groundsel can be a bit of a bugger to control.

Groundsel is everywhere, a very experienced agronomist once explained to me that he thought it's spread was due to the old rules on setaside which suited groundsel just nicely which makes sense.

I cannot for the life of me remember which phenoxies sort it out the best. I wouldn't let groundsel or mayweed get too big. Best sorted at 2-4 true leaves.

For a half decent infestation of any broadleaved weed you won't beat an reasonable dose of SU combined with a phenoxy. The also-ran's that sat alongside Ally containing tribenuron or thifensulfuron (as well as metsulfuron) had a slightly broader weed spectrum and were better at dealing with the weeds that ran along the edge of the ally spectrum.
