Measuring distance on google earth or similar

Google maps will do areas too, right click at first point and click measure distance, then keep clicking to put corners in, and once you're back to the start click on your first point to complete the shape and area comes up at the bottom in m2, divide by 10,000 to get ha

The Magic aerial map for my area is at least 10 years old. The Google Maps one is much newer (2014)

The satellite image used by Bing was taken in Sept 2011 in my area. I can see my drill going & have the records to see what day that was. How old is yours? I know the age of the images varies a lot, even on Google Earth.
