Mercedes C200 gear lever?

I have been driving a Mercedes
C200 auto for a while it is not mine just helping out an elderly
Gentleman who no longer drives
Either side of D there is plus and minus sign , what do these do
Also there is push button with
C and S by side of gear stick when in park ... what does it do
It is a very nice car to drive but
Is there any reason why I should not buy one
I am sitting in the car now waiting for the elderly gentleman to have new hearing
aid fitted
He is also a survivor from
Bomber Command

The + or - will be for 'manual' driving. My Citroen is a auto box pull into drive and away you go, but pull it side ways it goes into manual and on the dash it shows which gear you are in. Simple push gear goes up, simple pull back gear drops back a gear.

Only reason for not buying one would be if they have not resolved the corrosion problems.
I have just very sadly scrapped a C220 1999 model, it is rotten beyond what I can be bothered to weld up.
The point is that when the car was new, great play was made of the 30yr anti corrosion warranty that proved to be not worth the paper it was written on when after about 7yrs the bottoms of the doors and the boot went scabby, the original owner ended up paying local body shop to respray the bottom half because Merc would not do anything because it had not "perforated". There ought to have been a class action against Mercedes but they got away with it.

Mechanically sound cars but little rusts as well as a Merc. Funny enough French cars despite their clunkiness have remarkably sound bodies at 20 yo.

Not entirely, dad had an E class of 1999, Mercedes replaced the boot lid, reskinned the doors and totally painted the car for nothing at around 6 years old, no perforation but rust was present.

He'd been contacted by Mercedes and asked to take the car to the dealer of his choice to have it inspected.

Having reread @David. maybe there was a cut off date involved. If I Remember correctly Mercedes tried to blame a steel supplier for the problems.

I'd research any Mercedes purchase very carefully. A some point in years past they had terrible problems with electronic issues across their model range. They were nice cars though and the engines were pretty reliable.

Always thought their seat fabric was lovely - I know that doesn’t sound much of a compliment but it is..

It was sh!t Steel and water based paint used in that era that caused them to rust.

Mine was rusty at 4 year old. Merc didnt want to know as it hadnt been in for services inspections etc under my ownership.

Apologies if this is a bit random, but the gearbox letter questions reminded me of the South African bloke with BMW problems........
