Merlo Parking Brake

Why do they put these stupid electric parking brakes on? Cables much easier!!

Have been having issues with the parking brake not releasing when switched off for a while now. Light comes on on the dash and doesnt go out. Have been able to rectify this by switching machine on and off. Now, this won't work and the parking brake won't release! Have now also lost any drive.

The switch is working and the fuse is OK. Have found the solenoid that is supposed to release the brake and that is getting red hot when you flick the switch, so it must be the right one. Have tried swapping the solenoid valve with another one to rule out faulty valve and that won't work either.

I am presuming that the hydostatic drive is supposed to disconnect when the parking brake is applied - although ours has never worked like that.

Anyone got any ideas/solutions as it's got me beat??

Only advice is speak to your dealer.

If you have lost drive I wouldn’t mind betting you need a new drive couple between engine and pump. As for handbrake I would suspect a couple of new contacts on the back of the switch will sort this unless you have a failed coil.

Also the handbrake should hold the machine in second gear. First gear will have enough torque to override the handbrake, BUT if used like that will cause damaged. What model do you have?

Thanks for that. Have a 40.7 It just seems weird that it was driving fine, I stopped it and had the parking brake issue and then simultaneously lost the drive (this having previously been fine.)
You think the loss of drive and the parking brake are completely independent of each other? It just seems a hell of a coincidence.

The handbrake is fed off of the transmissions pilot/charge system so both linked. Put a test gauge on the test port that’s on the transmission filter housing you should have 25-30 bar.

might be wide of the mark but a M8 bolt failed on the mine about 5 years ago that holds the gear on the shaft in the selector box under the boom
machine freewheeled to a stop. a 50p bolt cost £700 to repair. unreal :scratchhead:

If the light on the dash does not go out it could be a faulty pressure switch on the block with the solenoid valve in it

That happened my 32.6 about 4 months ago, lost all drive and then the handbrake locked on!

Waiting for my engineer to come out to it again. I have passed all the comments on to him and he's looking in to it. He's sure it's not the drive coupling though. Suggested flywheel sensor maybe?
It's like losing your right leg being without the telehandler!!!

With engine running flywheel sensor will give error code on transmission ecu. Flashing red light
