Good Afternoon All

My name is Simon i am new to this group finding it through google

I'm an experienced metal detectorist with around 20years experience on and off from beaches to other farm land

i moved to the lovely area of Harrogate and would like to carry on my hobby of metal detecting.

i am fully insured with NCMD and would love to get back out there looking for any ancient artifacts and of cause any finds of value will be shared with yourself.

just wanting to get some permissions under my belt as i do it on my own and will leave no holes or mess on the fields.

hope some kind farmer/landowner can help.

would be happy to set up a meeting first to discuss further

many thanks
simon

Hi Simon,
I just retired early (I'm 57) ad my wife boght me a metal detector which I haven't used yet. I don't really know where to start. I also live in Harrogate. Did you manage to find some areas for searching? If you fancy detecting with a rookie I'd be well up for some advice.
Cheers and all the best.

Nice part of Yorkshire. I used to live there before moving away to work.

The family have several smallish farms in the area which i search when visiting. Sadly they now get pestered by wannabees on a regular basis who promise this and that such as showing all finds - well how about giving all finds back to the landowner as i do

Hi Steve,
Thanks for getting back to me. It’s a shame to learn that people are abusing the landowners this way. It just gives everyone a bad reputation.
I’m totally new to this, and I must admit when I told friends about it some of them laughed at me as though I was joining some low life community. I had no idea that metal detecting has this image.
Oh well - I will keep searching for somewhere to search.
Cheers and all the best,
Mike

Hi Mike,

The main problem surrounds the fact that any new detectorist is entering into a long established hobby and fail to realise that many landowners willing to grant permission, already have people searching their land. My relatives gave me permission way back in the late 70's and although now retired i still find time to visit both relatives and the land several times each year. They have no intention of granting permission to people they do not know or trust to comply with the rules.
In recent years on the back of various media hypes with Treasure finds and TV detecting soaps such as the Detectorists, so many new starters are coming into the hobby few of whom have done any homework on the hobby. For example they buy an expensive detector and then wonder "ah where can i go" so their problems start. Some tackle the issue by sending letters, making phone calls and then knocking on doors all of which are rarely productive whilst others try and find permission via a Forum such as this which is a total waste of time.

Good luck in your ventures.

Steve
